Taking Stock and Re-Examining the Role of Science Communication

2021

Eight science communication research projects have been funded by the European Commission since 2018. These projects are a response to one of the European Commission's 'Science with and for Society' (SwafS) funding calls ¿ 'SwafS-19: Taking stock and re-examining the role of science communication.' Together these projects have received almost ¿10 million in research funding, and each has been affected to some extent by the COVID-19 global pandemic. This paper provides an overview of the eight projects, how they adapted to the challenges caused by the pandemic, and the subsequent implications for science communication policy and research funding.

A bilinear version of Orlicz–Pettis theorem

2008

Abstract Given three Banach spaces X, Y and Z and a bounded bilinear map B : X × Y → Z , a sequence x = ( x n ) n ⊆ X is called B -absolutely summable if ∑ n = 1 ∞ ‖ B ( x n , y ) ‖ Z is finite for any y ∈ Y . Connections of this space with l weak 1 ( X ) are presented. A sequence x = ( x n ) n ⊆ X is called B -unconditionally summable if ∑ n = 1 ∞ | 〈 B ( x n , y ) , z ∗ 〉 | is finite for any y ∈ Y and z ∗ ∈ Z ∗ and for any M ⊆ N there exists x M ∈ X for which ∑ n ∈ M 〈 B ( x n , y ) , z ∗ 〉 = 〈 B ( x M , y ) , z ∗ 〉 for all y ∈ Y and z ∗ ∈ Z ∗ . A bilinear version of Orlicz–Pettis theorem is given in this setting and some applications are presented.

An extended JADE-S based framework for developing secure Multi-Agent Systems

2009

Agent communities are self-organized virtual spaces consisting of a large number of agents and their dynamic environments. Within a community, agents group together offering special e-services for effective, reliable, and mutual benefits. Usually, an agent community is composed of specialized agents performing one or more tasks in a single domain/sub-domain, or in highly intersecting domains. However, secure Multi- Agent Systems require severe mechanisms in order to prevent malicious attacks. Several limits affect exiting secure agents platform, such as the lack of a strong authentication system, the lack of a flexible distributed mechanism for access control and the lack of a system for st…

On general conditional random quantities

2009

In the first part of this paper, recalling a general discussion on iterated conditioning given by de Finetti in the appendix of his book, vol. 2, we give a representation of a conditional random quantity $X|HK$ as $(X|H)|K$. In this way, we obtain the classical formula $\pr{(XH|K)} =\pr{(X|HK)P(H|K)}$, by simply using linearity of prevision. Then, we consider the notion of general conditional prevision $\pr(X|Y)$, where $X$ and $Y$ are two random quantities, introduced in 1990 in a paper by Lad and Dickey. After recalling the case where $Y$ is an event, we consider the case of discrete finite random quantities and we make some critical comments and examples. We give a notion of coherence fo…

Modeling the remnants of core-collapse supernovae from luminous blue variable stars

2021

LBVs are massive evolved stars that suffer sporadic and violent mass-loss events. They have been proposed as the progenitors of some core-collapse SNe, but this idea is still debated due to the lack of direct evidence. Since SNRs can carry in their morphology the fingerprints of the progenitor stars as well as of the inhomogeneous CSM sculpted by the progenitors, the study of SNRs from LBVs could help to place core-collapse SNe in context with the evolution of massive stars. We investigate the physical, chemical and morphological properties of the remnants of SNe originating from LBVs, in order to search for signatures, revealing the nature of the progenitors, in the ejecta distribution and…

Numerical study of soliton stability, resolution and interactions in the 3D Zakharov–Kuznetsov equation

2021

International audience; We present a detailed numerical study of solutions to the Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation in three spatial dimensions. The equation is a three-dimensional generalization of the Korteweg-de Vries equation, though, not completely integrable. This equation is L-2-subcritical, and thus, solutions exist globally, for example, in the H-1 energy space. We first study stability of solitons with various perturbations in sizes and symmetry, and show asymptotic stability and formation of radiation, confirming the asymptotic stability result in Farah et al. (0000) for a larger class of initial data. We then investigate the solution behavior for different localizations and rates of de…

Reliability Analysis of Discrete Dynamic Systems under Non-Stationary Random Excitations

1987

In this paper we shall describe an approach to the study the reliability of structures modeled as linear discrete dynamic systems which has been designed to withstand nonstationary random excitations. Ne shall discuss this problem upon consideration the following four steps:

Nonlocal Elastic-Damage Interface Mechanical Model

2007

The paper presents a nonlocal extension of the elastic-damage interface mechanical model, which is able to describe the effects of the spatially extended microstructure on the decohesion (or fracture) process along a surface. The key feature of the proposed model is an integral constitutive relation between tractions and displacement jumps at the interface. The presence of an integral kernel brings in the model an internal length measure, which characterizes the transition from the microscale, dominated by heterogeneities and discontinuous media, to the mesoscale, characterized as an enhanced homogenized continuum with nonlocal features. The motivations and the fields of applications of the…
